Mark, Since you are already in touch with her, maybe you could recommend to her that she work up an article discussing cold water boating safety. She would have benefitted from a little more education before going out and there are a lot of people in her situation. Some good information in the NY Times could save lives. Swimming for it has an extremely high probability of failure. I take it they were wearing life jackets otherwise they probably would not have been able to stay afloat long enough to get rescued.
