Your knee may be experiencing 'referred' pain from your damaged hip. I've had total hip replacements of both hips (1996 & 1999) and have no problems with kayaking, canoeing, biking, golfing, handball (friendly doubles) and normal activities. The other 2 prior replies were good. My paddling did not cause the problem, just osteoarthritis (I'm now 59 and too young for that! but life happens). I highly agree with the suggestion to find an ortho dr that does lots of these procedures. My dr does several hundred a year. I'd be a cripple right now if it weren't for the hip work. Don't hesitate to seriously consider it and good luck!
