Hi kayak friends,

My music friends need your help. They are in a battle of the bands
competition, and have survived the 50+ band level and are now in the final
five. Voting is only this week. The winner gets flown to Ireland to play at
a famous festival (among Irish music heads anyway) in County Down.

What's this got to do with kayaking? Not much, except it was while kayak
camping in the Everglades that I wanted to play some music. Some research on
making a penny whistle out of PVC pipe so the salt water and sand wouldn't
bother it also turned up Irish Traditional Music and the fact that there
were people playing this music here in SW FL. Well, I made some whistles and
learned some tunes from these fine people, and many of them have become good
friends.

Currently my friends are in first place!! But we expect a hard fight to stay
in first. Others had a big push toward the end of the last round and passed
"West Of Galway" near the end. Thank goodness that was a top five move on
round.

You can only vote once, but you can pass the word on to others you know by
forwarding this e-mail. Voting only takes a minute. You do have to give your
e-mail address and name because they only want each person to vote once. But
they promise not to pester you with advertising if you check the box.

So, do it now. Go to Strangford Lough Brewing Co contest
page<http://www.slbc.ie/involved/competitions/> and
click the "Click here to vote" link and vote for "West of Galway" Oh, you
can watch their video too if you like.

Thanks for your help!

Slainte,

Carey

PS - If I somehow find myself in Ireland, I promise to go paddling and will
post pictures.

I promise to vote for them if you'll tell me the name of those hand
clackey things! I want to get me some or maybe make them.

And here's a neat site for making homemade insturments. They have a
couple things about penny whistles, but you can also make a whole set of
bag pipes with PVC pipe! All kinds of other interesting musical
instruments. I keep wanting to make a hurdy gurdy out of an old guitar!

I already voted for them but it was a near thing with the guy who can play
two whistles at one time and make Irish jazz. Dayum!!!

Those clackity things were pretty cool, all right.

I owe Mark a lunch, by the way.

Ha! I can only imagine how that might have come to pass.

Here's a link to the local newspaper regarding the contest and the band.
This particular band is a "pick-up team" of locals who came together 9 years
ago for a one-time performance. It was so well received that they are still
at it. The main challenge is from a professional regional touring band. So
we need all the help we can get.

It's getting close, but with the Maidens now!!

Doggone!

The software is supposed to send ASCII to Paddlewise!

I was saying that those clackity things are "bones" although more often today
they are made of wood. (Rib bones.)

The best I have ever seen with bones (or spoons or any other percussable thing)
then check out Benoit Bourque.

http://www.myspace.com/benoitbourque

QUOTING << Iritage, Ad vielle que pourra, Hommage ` Alfred Montmarquette,
Bourque et Bernard, Matapat, Le Vent du Nord, are all bands that enjoyed his
talents and his exceptional charisma. Specialist of Quebec tradionnal dances,
Benoit has presented lectures and workshops in many camps and festivals, showing
his skill in step dancing and bones playing (wich is a family tradition: his dad
and grandad were both bones players). >>

I remember he was part of Matapat for a while, and before that Eritage, both
Quebecois musical groups. I think he is now with La Bottine Souriante.

Rich and often exciting French-Canadian folk music that shows its roots in
Brittany -- and how similar that is to the rest of the Celtic world.

One of his routines when he was with Matapat was to shave a volunteer with a
straight razor, while step dancing. I like my beard anyway so I did not volunteer!

Hi- Greetings from the outer Hebrides! I've been lurking a while on
Paddlewise after a few years away from it...

Those clackey things are called bones. See 'Bones(instrument)'on
Wikipedia. Widely available, though a lot more expensive than when I got
mine many years ago.

Come over for a wee paddle if you're ever in the neighborhood, anybody.
I still have my 2 old K-Lights.

Slainte mhath! Elaine

Normally I vote multiple times. There's little sport in voting only once
and even less profit. What's not normal is selling my vote on trust. I have
always, on a point of principle, insisted on being paid up front. My fee
regularly invovles a pint of Irelands finest.

However since you are honourbaly attempting to fix an Irish election of
sorts I have forgone my principles and stepped down from my lofty standard
and cast my vote for the West of Calway gang. I even listened to the
videos.

I cannot believe a good pint of Guinness can be drawn in Florida, so Mr.
Carey Parks, if the West of Calway band carries the day I expect you to
stand for a pint when they reach Dublin. Preferably in person or if out of
necessity you cannot make the trip slip them the cash. A $100 bucks should
cover it.

If this is not acceptable I'm willing to meet you in Dublin to square up.
Anyplace along Temple Bar suits me. When's this festival happening?

Long live the Irish

Thanks for your vote Gordin! Are you in Chicago by any chance? (Ha) Oh,
never mind I see .ca in your address. Some great tunes up there in
Newfoundland eh?

I would enjoy nothing more than to be there to buy them some pints in
Ireland. But sending some cash would do, and just may remember to do that.
Better still, I'll see if any of my music contacts in Ireland will be at the
festival and task them with a surprise round that I can then repay via
PayPal. I'll work on that.

The Celtic Fusion Music Festival is in County Down on 18th July 2010. Which
happens to be three weeks after the fiddler's wife is expecting their first
child. Should be interesting!!!

Can a good pint of Guiness be pulled in Florida? Hmm.. maybe not, but after
a day paddling a kayak around these parts, even a poorly pulled pint tastes
mighty good. To borrow and old saw - "Even a poorly pulled pint of Guiness
is better than a well pulled pint of most anything else." To me anyway.
