Two weeks ago I returned from my yearly visit to Corsica. During that
trip, deep in the Corsican mountains, I met Kira, chained, starved,
covered in itch mite, half bold, without water and with a turned-over
refrigerator for shelter. I've adopted her and smuggled her to the
Netherlands. With some medical help and a ton of food, she's turned into
the most adorable dog one could ever have.

Today, I introduced her to kayaking. It took a big bowl of treats to get
her aboard, but once we were paddling, she was fearless and clearly
enjoying the experience. Here's a picture of our first trip together:

I never planned to own a dog - but I'm loving it.

Whatever the bond is between a human and a dog it's enhanced for a rescued
animal. The knowledge that you didn't just gain a friend but saved a life.
It works for cats, too.

Congratulations to both of you. :)

Wow it's not often you find a dog that understands both Corsican and Dutch?

I rescued a cat in Miami, Florida who followed me to Brazil and Uruguay. We
named him Johann Sebastian Bach and I always thought he could meow in three
languages.

I've met a great many dogs on Corsica, and ALL of them speak Dutch as
well as the local gibberish. They follow commands like "come", "get
lost", "want some food?" and "wanna play?" better than most humans. All
of them follow philosophical rants with interest, while none of them
finds a need to ask stupid questions. If this get too complicated, they
might interrupt with a "woof", inviting the speaker to explain things in
terms of balls and sticks instead of quantum mechanics.

(On a sidenote: Teaching either a dog or a human French should be
considered abuse. No rational brain can develop with a language that
can't count to 90 but needs to resort to "four-times-twenty-plus-ten".)

I haven't tried whether all dogs speak English too. For the moment, I
assume they don't, so I can conclude that Dutch is as close to a
universal language as one can get.

Dutch is pretty efficient too. The whole explanation above can be
summarized in Dutch as "onzin".

Update on my kayaking dog:

By now, Kira is comfortable enough to move around on my kayak. She lies,
sits, stands and walks on the deck, just needing a little help to pass
me on her way from front to back or vise versa. She only falls in when
trying to jump to other boats; she's been a passenger of at least 4
kayaks tonight. Only when soaking wet does she prefer the cockpit and my
warm lap. She even _likes_ kayaking: She's highly interested in
everything we pass, in the water and on shore. She's becoming the ideal
kayaking companion. I can't wait to show her my favorite places. The
warm weather's holding out in the Netherlands, and Kira's PFD should
arrive in two days... There's some good paddling ahead!
