In your discussion of navigation without instruments, have you heard of Marvin
Creamer who sailed around the world in 1982-1984 without the use of compass,
sextantor electronic instruments!

TheGLOBE STAR completed a successful circumnavigation of the globe, skippered
byProfessor Marvin Creamer of New Jersey. Creamer navigated without the use
ofcompass, sextant or electronic instruments! He eschewed even a wristwatch,
buttook an hourglass for changes of watch! Actually, a sextant, clock, compass
andradio were sealed in a locker below deck in event of an emergency, but
theseremained sealed for the entire journey, which was attested to and
notarized byproper inspections.
