"Ask yourself one question: why are there people in whitewater who paddle
class 5 with hand paddles if paddle length is so important? I'm well aware
of my mere mortal status, they amaze me, too."

Then, ask yourself this:

Would they use hand paddles if they could not also roll their boats with
them? Going over in white water is what happens in white water. Canoeists
paddle white water to get through it. White water kayakers paddle rapids to
play the waves, holes etc. White water kayakers keep at it with increasingly
challenging maneuvers and waves until they capsize! Then they roll up and
try it again until they Don't capsize!

Further illustration, I suppose, that what a paddler does and how he does so
remains a matter of individual choice.

Really? In any class III or better instructional I've been in, it was always emphasized that one chains together a plan of action and follows through on it. This includes spending some time in/on various features. It is a matter of control, no matter what the equipment.
One aspect that we try to disabuse the untrained paddler of is the notion of "Wow, I just survived running that rapid!!"

So do canoeists.

So do canoeists. And yes, we can roll those things. Hands-only included.
