PeterO asked: >>>>>Matt, I should have asked earlier what accuracy and time resolution are you seeking and over what distance.....<<<<<<It would be nice to watch the speed change as the result of each paddle stroke but I suspect if we could get and average speed over a much longer time period the paddler could stay long enough at constant speeds that we could derive a good drag curve from that. So the answer is, as good as is reasonably possible for a reasonable price. Adding a way to imput the output from a knotmeter to the data from the paddle might be all that was needed but if the paddle could figure out how fast its linear speed was in the direction the kayak is moving over several strokes and match that up with the energy the paddle applied to the water in the opposite direction (for long enough intervals to know the speed wasn't the result of previous greater or lesser energy expenditure) that should be useable to know how much drag the kayak has at any given speed. Multiple runs at different speeds should result in enough data points to derive a continious cur ve. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Although I've not really studied the posts on the topic - and am not a racer - I learned today (somewhat tangentially) that Canoe and Kayak Racing Magazine has published articles about instrumented paddles: - the mar-apr_2010 issue has a review of Talon's Excalibur paddle - the july-aug_2010 issue has an article about interpreting data from the paddle This is an online magazine - googling should turn up the links to the issues.
