Matt, Its been a while since I looked carefully at velocity measurements but scanning the web over the last couple of hours showed that many interesting and hopefully not too expensive devices have been developed for domestic, entertainment and sports use: MEM technology, ultrasonic, some of the better impeller technologies are looking good and perhaps even microwave radar will work. I'll check them out over the next few days and then summarise them. But wouldn't want to discourage others coming up with ideas - many hands make light work etc.....
