In your discussion of navigation without instruments, have you heard of Marvin
Creamer who sailed around the world in 1982-1984 without the use of compass,
sextantor electronic instruments!

TheGLOBE STAR completed a successful circumnavigation of the globe, skippered
byProfessor Marvin Creamer of New Jersey. Creamer navigated without the use
ofcompass, sextant or electronic instruments! He eschewed even a wristwatch,
buttook an hourglass for changes of watch! Actually, a sextant, clock, compass
andradio were sealed in a locker below deck in event of an emergency, but
theseremained sealed for the entire journey, which was attested to and
notarized byproper inspections.

I would think it relatively simple to sail around the world w/o
instrumentation.
You wouldn't know your route, and it might take 10 years, but I believe an
experienced seaman could pull it off with high probability.

1. He had accurate maps

2. He had lots of information about star positions

3. He could ask people where he was when near shore.

3. To sail around the world just requires that you go either west or
east for a long time.

Finding Easter Island is more difficult.
