I'm sure he'll fill you in with more details, but I'll break the news
that Duane Strosaker had a 15 foot great white shark bite his kayak as
he was paddling home from his oil rig excursion out by Gaviota, CA today.
He said the brute latched on for about 15 seconds and left several holes
in his Point Bennett kayak. He said he had to pump out five times on his
5 miles back to shore.

Hi Mark,

Do you know if Duane got any pictures? He is usually able to come back
with some great pictures so I hope he got one of the great white :)

I'm thinking that Duane was paddling so fast for the first mile after
the encounter that he didn't give any thought to hanging around for
pics, but we'll see!
It was interesting that Duane told me he was glad he had the five miles
to paddle home, because it gave him time to come back to peace with the
ocean! Something like getting back on the horse after a fall, except you
never really fell off! Makes sense to me. I think I would have been
calling the Coast Guard to come get me, especially as you may have more
damage than you realize.
I want to know if he saw any signs of the GWS before or after the "Love
Bite"?
He's showing off the boat at his house tonight, so I'm sure we'll have
some pics soon!

One thing is clear, no matter how fast you paddle it the Point Bennett
design is not self-bailing. :D

Duane put up some good photos. It sounds like he experienced one of the
"sampling" bites by the shark, instead of a vigorous attack. None the
less having a shark mouth the front deck by the bulkhead would be quite
an experience. Kudo's to Duane for deciding to paddle in and calling in
for assistance.

A couple of my favorite shark reports:

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sunday-telegraph/great-white-stalks-sydney-kayakers/story-e6frewt0-1111118420311

The shark in the video on the second link is a 15 footer.
