This event is in the first stages of birth. Several Puget Sound paddling groups have gotten together and decided to put on a "gathering" at Owens Beach in Tacoma on October 23rd. Nowhere near as organized as the old Symposium was this is more of a get-together with the opportunity to take a look at some new kayaks (Illusions, Tahe, etc). I am planning to be there unless the passes through the Cascades have early season problems. A bit more detail, as this is primarily a benefit for a fellow paddler. I shamelessly copy part of a posting from South Sound Area Kayakers (below). Pam from WA State Several of the Greater Puget Sound sea kayak groups are getting together to help support a fellow community member in a time of need through an event to be called "The Great Puget Sound Sea Kayakers Gathering". Here's the details: Play Day and Swap Meet to raise funds for Dave and Helaine Mottershead When: 10am Saturday October 23rd Where: Owens Beach, Tacoma Why: Bring the community together to meet each other, play, learn, and raise funds to give support for Dave during his cancer treatment. We are also asking some of the outfitters to bring their fleets for Demo. So far, we have Sterling, Tiderace, Maelstrom, Rockpool kayaks represented. How: Bring your new/used kayak and camping gear to sell or a cash donation. The objective is you go home without the gear you brought to sell and the the cause gets what you made as a donation. Potluck: Bring food to share. Auction: We will Auction off a Kim Hoover built skin on frame kayak at 1pm. (Pictures of the kayak will be posted soon), as well as other higher valued items that you might wish to donate. As most of you have already heard Dave Mottershead was recently diagnosed with cancer. He is a great teacher, mentor, and friend to many of us as Dave has been a part of the kayaking community for many years. If you would like to help Dave and Helaine just bring your new/used kayak and camping gear to sell. All proceeds will go into DaveC"b,b"s cancer fund. If you don't have any gear to donate then come to the play day and make a cash donation. If you are new to kayaking this is a great opportunity to purchase gear and help out. Pam, I'm unable to contribute because I too was diagnosed with inoperable metastatic pancreatic cancer 2 months ago but my prayers are with Dave and his wife. I don't know the type of cancer he has but I pray for many more years of quality life for him. Steve Holtzman Sent from my Wireless Crackberry er.....
