Kayaker pulled from Presque Isle Bay by Coast Guard
By MIKE MACIAG

A U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued a man whose kayak capsized Friday
morning in the choppy waters of Presque Isle Bay.

A bystander at the Erie County Convention Center first spotted the
26-year-old Pittsburgh man in the water and called 911 at 8:29 a.m., a
county dispatcher said.

The man, whose name was not released, was kayaking with a person in
another kayak when his boat capsized. His hip waders filled with water,
making it impossible for his friend to pull him out of the water, the
U.S. Coast Guard said.

Erie firefighters later spotted the two about 300 yards off Presque Isle
State Park and radioed their location to the Coast Guard.

At about 8:45 a.m., a Coast Guard crew arrived to find the man clinging
to his overturned kayak, which was tied to his friend's boat. He was not
wearing a life jacket.

Rescuers wrapped him in blankets before dropping him off to a waiting
ambulance parked near the Bicentennial Tower at Dobbins Landing.

The Coast Guard said the man was in "stable" condition, but showed signs
of hypothermia. He was taken to Hamot Medical Center for treatment.

Strong winds created high waves on the bay early Friday morning. The
water temperature was 54 degrees at the time of the rescue, the Coast
Guard said.

Erie Fire Chief Tony Pol said the other kayaker was able to paddle back
to the peninsula without assistance.

Your best story ever. Makes you wonder what the guy thought would happen. A few summers back I passed a young mom in a short rec boat paddling back from a barrier island with her three month old tucked between her knees. Yes both had on PFDs but I dont think the baby would have survived a capsize without pretty quick attention. Little tiny bodies lose heat so fast.

thinking. I'm betting they were both kayak "fishermen" and just using their
kayaks to paddle to a more promising beach from which to do surf fishing.

This sort of thing won't go on too long... I hear that the world will end in
2012 for one reason or another. The details are pretty vague but the end
result seems pretty popular. I hope it's not by fire... I already lost 4
kayaks in a fire.

It actually looks like a mob rub-out gone awry. The post-modern mob doesn't
have the patience to wait for the concrete shoes to set and dry, so they use
second-hand hip-waders from Goodwill (times are tough for the mob, too).
Anyways, that's how we do it on the west coast. Best, Harvey

Based on the movie, it'll be earthquake and tsunami. I watched it last
night (fast forwarded through the relationship scenes...booooring) and
was disappointed not to see anybody riding those epic waves. Oh, and the
West Coast is going first, of course.

Four words: Charles, Darwin, natural, selection.

Brad (nearly selected several times)

That's all well and good except I'm guessing that he's already passed his
genes (such as they are) along. So in about 30 years there will be
yet-another rescue of a person in a kayak with hip waders on and no PFD.

On the bright side, there seems to be no lack of attempts to weed out the
gene pool by the very people who have yet to contribute to it in any
meaningful way. At least if one believes the Jackass movies and America's
Funniest Home Videos.

I doubt anything meaningful can be accomplished before the end of the world
in 2012.

Two questions:

1. Would the use of a life jacket have made it any easier to pull him
out of the water?

2. Did anybody consider cutting the suspenders?

through. And a PFD, of course, would have made it even *more* difficult to
grab the suspenders. We should not just immediately assume these people are
idiots.
