A nice video of a downwind run on a double surf ski. this video is
interesting in that the bow paddler is the best downwind paddler in the
world and the stern paddler is an average paddler, The stern paddler
gets to learn a lot...

http://vimeo.com/18363570

It's surprising how much time is spent not paddling.

The surfing part of a surf ski looks fun. So what size swell do you need
before you're really having fun?

The waves need to be steep enough to get on. Large swell with a large
period may not have enough of an angle to ride.

A 20' motorboat wake sized wave is enough to start riding. The wave off
of a 40+ foot sport fishing boat is a blast. So maybe 2 foot to start
with, from there it just gets better until you get scared... One of my
friends saw 15 knots on his gps when he went straight down an 8 face
that was starting to break. He outran the break and just got hit with
foam.

Really looks like fun. I could feel the speed.

Anyone who might ever want to race in a tandem might take note of how
the stern paddler is consistently ahead of the bow paddler. Never fails
with less experienced boaters. A reason to always put the best paddler
in the stern. Without perfect coordination, the boat doesn't travel as
well.

Which paddler gets control of the rudder?

G'day,

Can anyone recommend a book on the history of kayaking? I'm looking for a
present for a friend who is learning everything they can about Greenland
technique and think they would appreciate knowing more about its background
and origins.

All the best, PeterO

Kayaks of Greenland by Harvey Golden, White House Grocery Press. Not cheap,
but it is as good as it gets.

Cheers,

Thanks Rob and Craig,

>From the reviews it looks like an excellent book covering the subject
comprehensively and at the level of detail I was hoping for. Also much
information on the books binding and production which is unusual and good to
see.

Thanks, I've just placed my order.

You won't regret it, it is a great book and a valuable resource for kayakers.

The video is great... the audio sucks. Why these guys insist on providing
their own music at high volume is beyond me... and when it's turned down you
can't hear the commentary. The noise of the water and the occasional
comments would be plenty entertaining. I had to turn it off.

I didn't see it until after I posted the original. There's also
