I bought a new Valley Nordkapp today; was $1000 off and I got free dockside
shed rental for 6 months so I can gently get back into paddling without
needing to lift a yak on and off a car and also the free "berth" rental was
as a gesture of goodwill by the store while I heal from the loss of my
partner Yvonne too. People have been so good to me in my community. I was
going to order a new custom Etain but don't know how good the paddling will
be with an L4 - L5 fusion/fixation so don't want to spend double for a yak
right now and the boats I have in my current fleet are all Ocean cockpits so
now I have a keyhole boat for easier ingress and egress. I will custom order
a Gemini playboat from Valley when I determine the correct time and get to
demo the boat to see if I like it. I am, and will always be, a Valley boy.
Alaska may have to wait another season though. I also saved enough that I
might buy another Valley yak in case I meet someone new over the next year
or two and want to introduce them to the port but really just want Yvonne
back but apparently that ain't going to happen in this current plan of
reality. One of my daughters want to get into real sea kayaking too.

I will move the bulkhead back, add a pod, and hopefully transition from my
previously ruddered Nordkapp (1980) to this newer (2010) skegged yak. I will
add a custom keel strip to the Nordy too and an underdeck pod possibly,
though I have toned down my extreme paddling for now. May save that for the
Gemini when the girls (my two teens) are a bit older and won't be worrying
about me so much.

Life is a bit lonely but life is good and getting better and I will be back
on the water one day where I tend to find my spirituality and meaning and
joy.

Happy Thanksgiving to my American pals.

Doug:

Life will not seem so lonely when you remember that people are smiling at
you
from all over the planet. I think you have grasped the major tenor of life:
Never ever give up.The past is past, the now is short-lived, and the future
is
coming up fast. I'm glad you're such a kayaking nut. And one day, you and
Reverend Bob will chase humpbacks in Alaska.

Glad to hear you will be back on the water soon. The sea has a way of
healing the lonely soul and weary body.
Take your time though...nice and stormy here today...gust to 60 on the
outer coast. Typical Thanksgiving story weather for us.
peace my friend and good paddling days ahead

Sounds like you are on the road to recovery, both physical and
emotional. So glad to hear that.

One of these years, on my annual visit to Vancouver & Victoria, I'm
going to have to try to get in touch. Old fashioned touch: face to face.

All the best,

I look forward to future stories from the new boat!
My friend Jack down here in SoCal is our local RG maven and he's a total
Valley Skerray paddler. I thinks he's owned as many as eleven at a time!
He scours the country to find the plastic versions to play with in the
rocks. I've moved from my Tempest 170 into a Zephyr for playing in the
rocks, although the plastic doesn't look like it's going to hold up as well.
Jen Kleck in San Diego is having an RG symposium down in Baja next year
that I'm hoping to attend.
I'm spending most of my time in my surfski chasing my friends with much
more time in the saddle than I.
Nice to hear you are healing in more ways than one.

Mark

Doug & list....

doug, hope your new boat works out well for you.... also sorry for you loss.
my wife is going to have level 4 "fusion" (c4-c7) surgery in January
she is wondering what to expect in the way of healing and being able
to get back on the water soon...
most of our paddling is fairly calm/smooth waters... rivers, lakes, bay and
inter-coastal around west central florida.... very little open water in the
gulf.
if anyone has had "upper neck/spinal" surgery feel free to contact me
off line to give hints or suggestions....
thanks,
steve

Hi Doug,

A new Nordy, and what's the first thing you do? Start chopping it up: well
done that man, don't they just beg to be modified.

Pleased that you're getting back into paddling, I'm looking forward to
hearing more stories. I also hope that we can meet up when I'm over your way
next year.

Cheers

JKA

No, I am going to paddle it stock for a few months. The store gave me 6
months free dockside rental and the staff will help me get the boat in the
water while my back heals. And then yes, heck, that Nordy gets heavier.
Fortified inside seams, an extra layer of glass under the seat and broadened
forward and aft, custom bulkheads, reinforced inside seams, new outside seam
and nose and stern integrated capping in carbon tape in black then
integrating seamlessly with a full keel strip, carbon layer over coaming to
match, front day hatch and thigh pod, wrap around bulkhead behind the seat
in carbon, electric pump super-sano situated, reflective deck lines, and
maybe a custom rudder sleeve that bolts on and off the stern with custom
carbon rudder, and sits in place like Paul Caffyn's rudder; no chopping off
the stern this time. Then look out ocean, cause I'm back! Okay, yes, it will
be choppy out there...

Paddlewisers,

It would seem to me that a factory lay-up Valley would be more
durable than an aging body anyway. And I must be getting spoiled and old,
because even my 30 lbs. surfski is starting to feel heavy when I carry it
across the beach.

Congratulations on the new kayak, Doug!

Duane,

Was watching some guys in light storm surf the other day; one fellow cracked
his Tahe Wind hull in nothing really bad. Another fellow I know split a seam
at Skook in a brand new tri ply Delphine. Tiderace make great kayaks but the
gelcoat chips off easily. Valley make a great product with superlative build
quality and I will address the few remaining issues to my satisfaction. I am
rebuilding my body to.
