I'm impressed that the Vancouver crew were organized enough to schedule you for a presentation ;-) I've had great luck getting paddlewise paddling companions when traveling. Every time I asked about paddling while traveling I received info on where to paddle, sometimes with people to paddle with and on one occasion a loaner boat. Can't help you on San Francisco, if you happen to swing by Boston/Portsmouth NH I'll kick in some ideas...
