I've got a lengthy comment to make on this, but am otherwise occupied today (and possibly tomorrow) due to the passing of one of my students. So I'm going to ask your collective indulgence while I try to draft a cogent response. The short short version is: mailing lists are vastly superior communications media, which is why those of us who are the most experienced and knowledgeable people on the Internet use them to talk to each other. (And we could use anything we want: heck, we invented most of it.)
