Everything changes. It's possible that Paddlewise provided more authors of articles to Sea Kayaker Magazine than any other single venue. But today they announced via emails to subscribers that they would cease publication of SKM after the next month's issue. End of an era. I'll miss it. I enjoyed writing for it. Paddlewisers, Unbelievable! It's like Mr. Roll or Drown himself shut down his website, put all of his kayaks up for sale, and bought some brand spanking new SUPs. And I think I have a year or two left on my subscription. The magazine taught me a lot of interesting things. I do know that SUP is drawing a lot of our demographic away. I have gotten more into waveski surfing and less into kayak touring camping. The internet seems to be herding us toward the butt of the old joke that print is dead. Regarding SeaKayaker Magazine: A loss, yes, but what a fine run! Truly stayed on top the entire way, too. I imagine some on-line entity will fill in (perhaps probably has?). If not, might I suggest a name? "Sit Down Paddler Magazine." End of an era. B SK was a wonderful resource and the flagship of sea kayaking publications. Thanks to the editor, publisher, contribitors, and staff for the many years of enjoyment and knowledge they sent my way. -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Wow. That's sad. But what's really sad is no notice. :-( Does anyone know if Wavelength is still around? I checked Facebook and there is a Wavelength Magazine but the site is for board surfing. Jackie, http://www.wavelengthmagazine.com/ Seems that they are printing three issues per year. Sigh I will miss SKM, subscribed it since 1996 or 1997. The Wavelength mantle has been assumed by Coast and Kayak, editor John Kimantas. B Similar emphasis, higher quality writing, superior graphics, and I think monthly. B Strong BC focus. B Kimantas produced a series of paddling guides to coastal BC, very well done, all field checked by him. B Kimantas is the real deal, with prior experience as a journalist. B Doubt he/they will try to fill the Sea Kayaker void, but maybe we will be left with a couple players in the field. Here: B http://www.wavelengthmagazine.com B Similar URL to the old Wavelength one. B Scroll down for a tablet/smartphone tailored version; Android OS will no longer tolerate Adobe Flash Player. -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR -------- Original message -------- >From Jackie Myers <jackie_at_muddypuppies.com> Date: 11/13/2013 10:17 AM (GMT-08:00) To Paddlewise <paddlewise_at_paddlewise.net> Subject Re: [Paddlewise] Sea Kayaker Magazine to Cease Publication Wow.B That's sad.B But what's really sad is no notice.B :-( Does anyone know if Wavelength is still around?B I checked Facebook and there is a Wavelength Magazine but the site is for board surfing. Thanks, Dave. I found their Facebook page. Very nice. Doesn't appear that members (or whatever you call users that "Like" a page) are able to post to the main page but are able to post in a connected area. https://www.facebook.com/pages/CoastKayak-Magazine/310453918968630 Bob and I have been working on setting up a Facebook page for PaddleWise so members could post trip reports with photos as well as have discussions. Just not sure the best way to set it up. Facebook doesn't have a way to organize stories like a website with links but websites are difficult for visitors/members to post without involving an administrator. A lot of pages for organizations or interests have been set up on Facebook but they seem to fizzle out. Anyone have any suggestions?
