Hi everyone.

I am like to try some sailing using my FG kayak. Is there anyone producing
a "relatively" cheap spinnaker kayak sailing rig or does someone know where
I could get some information on making my own sail. Really any information
at all would be appreciated.

I believe the kit that Folbot makes for their kayaks is fairly inexpensive,
and it would be fairly easy to modify a fiberglass or wood boat to accept
it. - you can check their website.

A recent Sea Kayak mag had an article and plans for contructing a sail.
I'm not sure what a spinnaker is, so I don't know if that's what the
plans were for or not.

Primex, distributed by Deluge, makes a very simple triangular sail that
clamps to the fron of the cockpit. If you look at one (they have a web
site) you can probebly figure out how to make it. Then again, they only
want $125 for it.

Get back to us with what you end up making, OK?

Folbot sells a distorted-diamond-shaped "Twins" sail rig, which is
idiot-proof, for $400, I think (http://www.folbot.com/). Strictly
downwind, but durable and all made up. I have used it in my Greenland
II folding double and like it for its simplicity and convenience. You
could make a similar sail rig with maybe 50 feet of 1/4 inch line, a
reshaped plastic tarp duct-taped to a collapsible booming stick (mast),
and something glassed to the inside of your hull for the bottom of the
mast. Might run you US$80 or less.

Most yaks are pretty much restricted to downwind or maybe a broad reach,
unless you cobble up a leeboard or add a keel.

You could have a look at:

http://www.tassie.net.au/~lford/sails.htm

I finished making a 'Tasmanian style' mast step and rig for my Capella a few
weeks ago. Step was made from a a piece of brass tube mounted in a knee tube
fabricated from GRP, the knee tube providing support for the deck/step. I
have a mark #1 experimental sail made from a piece of old nylon fly sheet
material, two bamboo canes, a shower curtain rail, piece of dowel, and some
duck tape. The step went through a few prototypes but the sail was extremely
quick/cheap to make!

Unfortunately I'm in the process of moving house, and haven't had time to
try it on the water yet.
But should get out for a paddle locally on Wednesday evening, and on Friday
(five days and counting), I'm off to Achnahaird and the Summer Isles
(58º1'N 5º24'W - west coast of Scotland, 40 miles north of Skye, yeeeeha!)
so initial sea trials will hopefully take place soon. I suspect that this
first sail may be a wee bit too big, but If I like it then I have some
ripstop nylon and some carbon kite spars with which to make (stitch, not
duck tape :-) a more permanent sail.

Peter Carter posted some very useful advice about these types of sails to
Wave~length, and if I remember correctly Andrew Eddy posted some excellent
comments about his experiences with home made sails to Paddlewise. If anyone
is interested in these posts I'll have them archived somewhere.

Here is a couple of other places to look.

http://www.easyriderkayaks.com
They sell a spinnaker sail (6sq ft)

http://www.Feathercraft.com/
They have a larger spinnaker sail

http://www.paddlin.com/fivelakes/canoe_sailing.html
Lateen sail rig(inexspencive!)

http://www.tassie.net.au/~lford/
LOTS of links and info on making sails for kayaks.

http://www.vision.net.au/~jennings/
Seems like this is a good one also

good luck
