Hi TM Ocean surfing is all I do! Several times a week. I'm also a kayak dealer. I'd say to you go for the Necky Jive. They now have three lengths. The original, the longer and now the short one. Go for the original if you're up to 5'11. Go for the longer of you're over 6' I personally have a Necky Groovy and I'm VERY happy with it. I'm 6' 4" and weight about 210 lbs. But this boat is not for white water rivers. The Alamax surfs well also. But it is restricted to traditional ocean surfing moves.... roller coasters, roundhouse cutbacks and so on. If you want to do cartwheels and tail slashes you need the Jive. I have been a SK paddler until now but my boat is like driving a tractor trailer in the surf. I have talked to some locals that say the Nekey Jive and Rip are great. Are these a bit forgiving for someone not accustomed to surfing a short boat? I like the idea of being able to use them in whitewater too ....when the time comes. I also hear the Wilderness Systems Alamak is decent but more geared only to surf and cant cross to whitewater....true? Suggestions? Now, the technical stuff...how to get started. Is this a situation of "just do it" or are there a few things I could do in a new boat to get used to it (say on flat water). Of course I plan on using the roll to the max.
