Thanks to everyone for the suggestions for waterproof binocs.
It will make my search a bit easier.

(FYI: current binocs are USD$50 SEARS 8X25 minis,
vintage 1980, which travel in a ziplock baggy
      stuffed in PFD pocket.)

Now, for something even more expensive and way gearhead:
Any recommendations for binocs that give the range (distance
to object in focus) and a compass bearing?

Oh yes, and what about night vision scopes?
What for? I dunno, to look for bats, lurking canoes, stray
twinkies stuffed in nose of boat and the like.

What's your current price range for new, waterproof binoculars?

Sure. Leica Geovid 7x42 BDA.

"Way gearhead," indeed. But, Chris, there's that pesky budget issue again.
Are you newly rich? Because you could buy a decent used car for the price of
a pair of these. According to Leica: "The scientific magazine Popular
Science awarded its prize for trendsetting innovation to the Geovid 7x42 BDA
binocular." Could be just what you need.

Are you playing with us?

Gronseth pointed out to me that all waterproof binoculars have adjustable
eyepieces on each lens.... Thus, they easily break down into two,
monoculars. I bought a pair of Tasco 7X50's from Boat/US...at about $250.
One side has a lighted compass making it useful as a hand bearing compass
even at night.

One set of binoculars and voila: my wife and I each have a monocular... we
just fight over who gets the compass.

Share the cost and cut down on the weight. Works fine for me.

Robert

PS. In a bouncy little boat, the lower power and the wide field of vision
in the 7X50 IMHO, is the better choice. As light begins to fade, these are
also useful in collecting light. It's not night vision, but useful to keep
in mind.
