For those who've done extended runs on remote rivers, the sight of the much-
beloved "groover", the well-used ammo can, strapped to the side of the support
raft, may be a thing of the past. Technology moves us ahead.

A recent copy of the International Autosport catalog --- an interesting
compendium of expensive and virtually useless car-toys --- out ot
Charlottesville, Virginia, has, on page 39, a wondrous new device called an
"Inflate-a-Potty". Shown in color photos deflated in a small, hand-held stuff
sack and in its inflated form --- vaguely resembing three, horseshoe-shaped
inflated inner tubes stacked on top of one another, this "... convenient and
sanitary solution when restrooms are not available" comes with three standard
13-gallon trash bags. What a concept!

Based on the workmanship apparent in the photograph, however, it might be
advisable to keep the Inflate-a-Potty away from sharp-edged scree and,
possibly, pine needles, less one have a deflating, "let-down" experience at a
particularly critical time! Unsuitable for deployment on the afterdecks of
Nordkapps and other skinny boats. Suitable for operation in Spectrums and
possibly Coasters.

Thought all PaddleWise-asses should know about this important, uplifting
development in outdoor living through chemistry!

I'm having a problem with the visual on this one. Are you saying I now can
have a padded port-o- potty in the wilds? Was there a cost/benefit analysis
done on this hooha?
Can you still keep ammo in it?

Can the raft pump inflate it, or is the rafting company's intern assigned
the task?

Bottom line, it looks good --- CBA notwithstanding. Mortar shells only ---
and for the quick! Liquid rocket fuel excluded, please.

many places no long allow the ammo-can style potty, with its trash bag
recepticle. many places require something that connects to the RV dump.
an example is ruby/horsethief canyons on the colorado. the park ranger
there inspects all groups for two things: "groover" and firepan. i even
saw him turn one group back for that very thing, all they had was the
ammo can trash bag system...

I used a specicially built groover this summer which was quite
satisfactory. Unfortunately, I don't know the manufacturer, but the system
had a rudimentary seat which did not make grooves, used the standard blue
fluid and had a pretty much hands-free clean-out system. I was pleasantly
surprised by the lack of odor and general inoffensiveness of the whole
thing. It was not inflatable and seamed pretty secure.

Could this also be used as a floatation devices for rescues and fishing? If so
it would be more useful on Nordkapps etc.
Has the maker of Sp*ns*ns heard about this? I see a new device called the
SponCan.

Oh by all means YES! You just slightly deflate your inflatable porta-potty,
slip the thing over your head and re-inflate it until it is fitting snug
around your neck and won't slip over your head in the event of a mishap. Any
olfactoral stimulation is strictly a product of your elimination.
