Two weeks ago I was paddling in my dry suit, cold water but sunny 70 degree day and overheated. I needed more ventilation and thought back to a short article by George Gronseth, published in Sea Kayker magazine about neck rings. My questions are, does anyone use them, do they work well, safety concerns? frank *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ *************************************************************************** *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************

This can be a really interesting debate (as I remember) when it ran its course on Wavelength long ago. Involutary flooding of your drysuit from a roll or capsize will convince you of the risks. Cold water shock treatment, and the extra pounds added by water intake will make self rescue interesting, if not outright difficult. There will be much to be said on this topic by others I am certain. Good question you have asked. Uh-oh. Let me say this before things heat up, as a former proponent of neck rings who took much flack for it a while back. I used to use one until the time I purposely rolled in Lake Superior in May, forgetting that I had one on. I was cured after that. I still dont think they are as evil as some will portray them, but unless you're perfect (I wasnt) you may be sorry (or worse) you wore one at some point in the future. If you never make a mistake, you'll be just fine. ;-) Wayne At 09:32 PM 11/3/98 -0500, Frank Montbriand wrote: >Two weeks ago I was paddling in my dry suit, cold water but sunny 70 degree >day and overheated. My feeling is that neck rings work great for the scenario mentioned below. Rolling with the kind of neck ring I use, a 1 inch or so diameter rubber tube, produces leakage of a few cups or maybe a quart of water. Even a gallon or two of water wouldn't be lifethreatening in any way, unless you are wearing sodium underwear. Of course, if the neck ring was hard to remove, then an extended amount of water could enter the suit and cause potentially serious problems. But the neck ring I use is so easy to disengage by pushing it inside the latex collar. Yes it is still around your neck, but so is the latex. When paddling in rough conditions where a flip is possible, remove the neck ring. When paddling in calm conditions, wear it if desired. So simple.
