>>Does anyone know of a more reliable technique?<< I wrote an article for the winter 1992 issue of Sea kayaker Magazine about a roll I developed. I called it the pivot roll. In the seven years since the article was printed I have used this roll in surf and tidal currents with doubles and during reentry and rolls. It can be done one handed. It does not work with a feathered paddle unless it has a paddle float mounted. A good reason to use an unfeathered paddle. "The roll involves extending the paddle straight out to one side of the over turned kayak and placing a paddle blade against the deck/coaming of the kayak to create a pivot-point. The paddle becomes a long lever with a flat blade at one end. As the paddle is pulled down the contact between paddle and kayak focuses and directs the movement of the paddle while the kayak rotates with the hip snap... The blade angle is not a problem. The roll has no complicated paddle or body movement. Strong wind or wave action will not interfere with the paddle, which is extended from the deck coaming and kept below the surface turbulence. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Sat Jan 30 1999 - 00:56:27 PST
