Well yes, I think that women are well-suited to kayaking. The many reasons have been noted. I don't think that brute-strength is a prerequisite as I have seen the muscle-bound in inaction. Grace, finesse, agility? Why of course! Endurance, discipline and commend sense can be had by all! Its always great to have babes around to disarm and charm us men, ain't it guys? For anatomical reasons women are more susceptible to urinary tract infections resulting from prolonged exposure to seawater. Indeed. I've found that some men are also suited for sea kayaking. They have so many handicaps to overcome when persuing the sport, those that persist I admire all the more for it. I seem to recall reading once that women are anatomicaly designed for long term endurance, where men are designed for short term brute strength. It would stand to reason that women would be better at sea kayaking than men are. The part about the male tendency to use brute strength over finesse has already been discussed here, so I won't bother with that. Men have much higher VO2 max averages at the elite level endurance sports---Cross country skiing, cycling, etc., the Oxygen and energy processing ability is so drastically lopsided in favor of the men, the women have to race in completely separate events, or end up completely shut out every time. But women can be more enjoyable to kayak with :-) Regards, Dan Volker -----Original Message----- From: owner-paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net [mailto:owner-paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net]On Behalf Of Michael R Noyes Sent: Friday, February 12, 1999 11:49 AM To: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subject: Re: [Paddlewise] WOMEN or is that a WOMAN? Grace, finesse, agility? Why of >course! Endurance, discipline and commend sense can be had by all! I usually paddle & practice alone so don't often get to see others strutting their stuff. However, I never expect to see anyone as stylish or graceful in an 18 foot sea kayak as the young woman instructor I had on a week long session a couple of years ago in Maine. All of her maneuvers were so effortless and elegant that I'd just as soon watch her as do them myself. Ok, she was real pretty and super nice too but that was just a bonus. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
