Steve Scherrer's request for info regarding sources for footpumps got
me thinking about creating some kind of archive system for Paddlewise
messages. Does anyone out there do already do this? Sure, a goodly
percentage of the messages here are just friendly banter and probably
aren't worth keeping, but there's also a lot of good info that seems
like a shame to lose (well, maybe it's just a problem with my brain, but
I can't keep track of all of the good stuff). Any thoughts? (or just
not worth thinking about<g>)

The archives are automated, at least all of the traffic is still at
lists.intelenet.net. You can download it in slabs, by date. Sending
an email with the first line of help to majordomo_at_lists.intelenet.net
should get you started. I'm assuming Jackie hasn't disabled archiving.

Someone on the baidarka mailing list created a site,
http://robroy.totalsports.net/baidarka, where the mailing list archives are
now stored in searchable form. I point this out since the baidarka mailing
list is also hosted by intelenet, so the whatever Charles figured out to do
the baidarka mailing list could quickly be adapted to paddlewise.

My grumble with the mailing list becoming a web site is now the spammers
email address harvesters simply hit that website, instead of jumping
through any hoops to join the list and then sponge addresses.

Just thinking the same thing Dave, wondering which deck compass to get
and thinking that it had probably been gone over on the list many times.
A good FAQ would be nice....oh,

and the problem with my brain has to do with the answer to the question
'Any thoughts?'.

Aquameter makes a model called the Sailor II which has big, highly visible
numerals, and comes with a deckplate and hardware to mount to the deck (if
you have a flat, level spot). If needed, you can fabricate a circular
plate to affix to your deck hardware (bungees) out of the endcap of a
4-inch black PVC water pipe (carve the underside to the deck contour), or
buy a factory version which Aquaterra sells (US$12, I think).

The Sailor II runs about US$40 to US$50, I think.
