This is a response to the hat thread. A local
Dermatologist said the at the beginning of the century
skin cancer rates were 1 in 1500. Today the rate is 1 in
75. Even though I agree with another subsrciber that the
Patagonia duck billed hats are nice, I am in search of a
hat that will provide protection for my ears. I am
looking at various Cowboy style hats that are made of
straw or cloth.

Good Paddling and applying Sun screen,
Don Dimond

I confession to make (cringe, sob sob - about the purchase
place), I now use a leather hat that I bought last year in
Australia (!!!!) The little gold kangaroo on one side in the
hatband will soon be balanced by a kiwi on the other side.
I'd better fit it soon or my paddling partner will want to
know why (it's not there yet).

The hat came without any method of holding on in high
winds but on each side there are two grommetted vent holes
and a leather boot lace(?) is now threaded through them and
under my chin and a plastic toggle tensions it. At the very
worst, 30 knot gusts, it blows off backwards and gently
strangles me.

A number of our group use leather hats, one uses a varnished
(yes, varnish as is applied to furniture) cloth hat of the same
style.

All of these cover the ears - similar in style to the Tilley hats.

Try your local crafting store, or Walmart. I got mine at
Target for about $4.

I use a OR Gore-Tex hat, but I also wear a navy watch cap when it is cold
(which is every time I've been out kayaking 8^) The strap is comfortable
enough, but the adjustable fleece head band make it one of the most
comfortable hats I've worn.

Itried an OR hat...not goretex. It was baseball cap...with the neck-shade
attached via velcro. After a few rolls... all I had left was the
neck-shade. The baseball hat found it's way to DJ's locker.
