This is a response to the hat thread. A local

Patagonia duck billed hats are nice, I am in search of a
hat that will provide protection for my ears. I am
looking at various Cowboy style hats that are made of
straw or cloth.

My lovely wife, an avid outdoors person, had skin cancer a couple of years
ago. It went into the lymphatic nodes, what a bloody mess, not only to her
body and mental well-being, but the whole state of our families life as she
was pregnant with our second child. The doctor had let it go for two years,
dissmissing the black mole as a blood blister. I threatened, he finally did
a biopsy, and phoned back trembeling that the situation was serious. Cancer
is serious. The beautiful sunshine we all enjoy can kill you. Use your sun
hats. Use your sun screen. We buy a large pump bottle every year, and apply
religiously every morning before heading out. Take these posts seriously.

My hat of choice for kayaking and most other outdoor activities is a Tilly's
Endurable. Mine is old and beat up, but it has a wide enough brim to keep
my neck and ears protected, it floats, the strap system works to keep it on
my head when I am going too fast to just keep it on by pulling it down
tight. So far I have worn out two of the strap cords and the hat is going
strong.

Since everyone is mentioning their favorite hats I guess I'll mention mine
- Watership Trading at http://www.watershiptrading.com/

Actually, aside from their hats, my favorite is the one I got in 1986 from
Patagonia - the baseball style, white mesh on top, long brim that you can
cinch around your head, and even wear it under other hats if it is
raining..

I checked out some hats yesterday. The Ultimate Hat, made in Tampa and
based on the Tilly design, but more tropical, seemed excellent.
Unfortunately, they didn't have one in my size.

I have an Ultimate Hat, but haven't worn it lately. It's well made.
I've gone to one of the felt hats sold by so many outdoor stores.
ScotchGarded the outside for water-shedding, and it does a good job in all
kinds of weather.
I just got the new NOC catalog and they list the OR hats, and two really
broadbrimmed hats from Watership Trading. One has a black underbrim to
reduce glare.

Yes, but the Tilly, though MUCH costlier, is stiff enough to hold its shape
in a blow, can be shaped and reshaped to fit conditions, is organic, and made
with "traditional Canadian Persnicketiness (sp)?"

The only hat I've ever loved.

My first one disappeared when the chin strap, weakened from years of abrasion
from my throat stubble, broke in a dumping 6-foot surf. It floated away as I
was busy rescuing several students who had been scattered in the water by the
previous wave set. By the time I was able to return to search for it, I could
not find it. I have always imagined that it found a better life, shading the
head of a lovely mama somewhere on a remote tropical island.

Hey guys! Now I can get new use to my large collection of Isla
Negra Red bottle tops: the cork is supposed float quite a long time,
right?

My SO´s mother sew us two white peaked caps to use and I would
never want to lose them. At least they were white few summers
ago... I am just planning to decorate them with the cork... hmm...

Oh boy the friday night is coming...

Cheers folks ;-)

Hello all,

I'm new on the list, but I hope you all don't mind me jumping in. Regarding
hats, particularly Bob. I found a good Tilley-style hat at a local
Army-Navy surplus store. It's probably more a Marine recon patrol style
then Tilley, but the it's the same basic shape. I've seen the Ultimate Hat
and it seemed kind of heavy for Florida (I'm in Orlando) to me. I've been
using the Army-Navy hat for a couple of months and find it perfect
(although now that I think of it, I haven't checked to see if it floats).

You can pick one up though for about 20% the price. _And_ you'll have more
than three different types of camo to choose from. Being a rather
traiditional guy, I went for the straight beige. A matter of personal
preference really. :-)

I have an issue desert camo hat but it's brim is smaller then I'd like. The
Ultimate hat I saw was a very light weight version of the Tilly with
floating brim and secret pocket.
