There has been some discussion about creating an archive, but to date, no
one has volunteered to do it. Thus, at present the only "archive" that is
available is that which still remains on our individual email list. A
shame too, for there is much valuable and interesting material that has
been available through subscription to this mailing list.

----------

For what it's worth, I've created an area on my web site,
(http://csisler.com/Paddlewise.htm), intended to store interesting
Paddlewise threads. There are two recent threads out there now and I'll be
adding Jack Martin's Lake Erie Death thread tonight.

This is not something I'm willing to maintain all by myself. I will collect
and post things I find to be of interest. If you think a thread has value,
you should collect it and mail it to me for posting. Don't count on me
doing so. I may not even know the thread is interesting. :-)

I've taken the time so far to get permission from the authors of the posts
before publishing the threads. I suspect at least one of the authors finds
this process mildly irksome. I don't want any copyright issues but also
don't want to be annoying. What do you think? I'm half of a mind to post
whatever and remove all or part of it if someone complains.

The membership for this list is not closed. Although anyone could
get a list of all subscribed email addresses, few are inclined to
either care or bother to do so. There is no reasonable assumption
that what is written here could not be read by anyone who cares to
do so. With this in mind I think Sisler or anyone else could
extract posts to create threads or archives provided that all
attributions are kept and that no monetary profit is derived from
making any such collections of threads/posts.

Certainly if anyone objects to their inclusion in such an archive
or thread, they can let the archive-master (webmaster) know and I am
fairly certain that any reasonable request will be handled fairly.

If anyone doesn't like the selection of posts, then they can either
go fly a kite, or make their own archive.

I applaud Clydes efforts.

If posts come through *without* a copyright restriction, I see no
indication that the party did not intend for the material to be published
freely.

In otherwords, unless the party posting makes a declariation that "all
rights reserved," or attaches a "copy right" symbol, go ahead and publish,
simply giving the publishing party credit.

In response to Clyde's post about republishing material on the list,

Seems like about a year ago we went through this concept. I'm
sure Robert's right --- stuff does tend to become public domain
unless it's stated to be otherwise (and, even then, it looks like it
might be impossible to enforce protection), but I think Clyde was
correct in asking if the authors had any problem in his reposting
their inputs on a web site. We ought to be working within the spirit
of the law, not just the letter, especially when we're trying to work
together as some sort of electronically enhanced "group" on this
list. While it may not be necessary to ask permission to republish,
it's certainly a very appropriate thing for "friends" to to do with
"friends", and I appreciated Clyde's request to reprint the article I
wrote on Tom Hancock --- even though I specifically gave away all
rights to re-post the material in the article itself, hoping that the
word <would> get out to other lists and to other paddlers.

Which is what Clyde is trying to do. I applaud his efforts and his
means of getting there.

Jack Martin
