Join us for the exciting 3rd annual San Juan Challenge, May 15 and 16, 1999! This years' Challenge will be held in conjunction with the Anacortes Waterfront Festival. The Start and Finish Line is in the heart of Cap Sante Marina, in full view of the thousands who come to the Waterfront Festival each year!

The San Juan Challenge is a 2-day, 40-mile Sea Kayak Race from Anacortes to Rosario Resort on San Juan Islands. Alternatively, on Saturday May 15 you can enter the shorter Guemes Challenge, which starts concurrently with the San Juan Challenge but circumnavigates Guemes Island back to Cap Sante Marina, a one-day course of 16.5 miles.

Both races feature challenging routes through the beautiful San Juan Islands. Currents are substantial, particularly this year, and participants should be prepared for rough water.

Other kayak activities at the Waterfront Festival include a small boat show (canoe, kayak, sail), a demonstration of kayak polo, stable sit-on-tops for trying out in the sheltered marina, and a recreational paddle down the Guemes Channel.

For complete information, see our Website at <www.sjcraceandexpo.org>. You can download registration information, including complete rules and information and application form, from the Website.

See also the Waterfront Festival Website at <www.anacortes-chamber.com/waterfront.htm>

Hope to see you there May 15 and 16!

Bob Apter
