Wayne, Cumberland Island is a fairly demanding crossing, and I would discourage that with two newbies. However egos such as mine can make the crossing blindfolded, with one hand tied behind my back....(snigger, snigger, snort). There is a possibility of taking the ferry over with kayaks as stowage, but it takes some lead time with the permits and and arrangements and whatnot. Day paddles are a good option, but as far as I know nearly all the paddlers are heading out of town this coming weekend for the Charleston Kayak Symposium. I know I will be. There is Seakayak Georgia who can be reached at: SeaKayakGa_at_aol.com who are really about the only rental facility in Savannah. If they have their own equipment, or can get it, there is a campground both on Tybee Island and Skidaway Island state park. From Skidaway, they can put in at Priest's landing and easily make a day trip to Wassau Island, but can't camp there overnight. From Tybee, it is possible to do a quick crossing of a channel (chimney creek), and a little breakwater shoal (easily avoided) and camp on Little Tybee (larger than big Tybee), although it is thoroughly undeveloped, no water. Carry water. There is a put in at Lazaretto Creek that winds around and eventually comes out into the shipping lane of Savannah River (not recommended), however before scrapping with container ships, one can stop off at lovely little Cockspur Island for a visit to a late 18th-early 19th century abandoned lighthouse that one can climb, 'ere one gets to the scrappy stuff with the container ships, who can't see you, or can't stop if they do. They will however, wave. The Vernon River on the Isle of Hope is an especially lovely paddle on a full-moon tide at night, as it feeds into a myriad of ancient rice fields (they used to grow a salt water or brackish variety of rice down h'eah) that flood on a moon tide, it looks like what I envisioned a scene out of Tolkien to be. It beats the heck out of the Slough of Despondency on the Isle of Despair anyway, which was not a fun paddle at all. (Ok, I made that one up.)
