RE: open-cell foam pads under the Thermarest, and about deluxe Thermarest pads. I don't use either of them any more. The open-cell foam sponges up water, and it does nothing to insulate you against ground chill in cold weather. Both types of pads take up more room in the boat, or on the deck, than I'm willing to allocate to my "bedroom". A shortie Thermrest Lite is sufficient, even for this bony, aging body. But - take a repair kit. Somebody said they're delicate, and that's true, though I've had very good luck with them.
