[Paddlewise] Garmin GPS 12 with rechargeables?

Got a neat birthday present, a Garmin 12 GPS receiver. I've been trying it
out with both NiHd and special kind of alkaline rechargeables (BIC); works
ok but definitely not for long! Couple of hours and the battery indicator
was down at half charge. What was worse, the unit switched off all by its
own after a short period, even though the indicator was showing around 50%
remaining charge.

Anyone running a Garmin 12 with rechargeables? Switch-off trouble? I thought
the "auto switch-off" was a malfunction but now the unit seems to function
just fine - after I inserted four *real* alkaline batteries..
