Hal -- A few rental places are:

Northwest Outdoor Center (on Lake Union)
2100 Westlake N
tel 206 281 9694
They also have a web site (doesn't everyone) at www.nwoc.com

Pacific Water Sports (near the Seattle Tacoma airport)
16055 Pacific Hwy South
206 246 9385

Kayak Pursuits (in Redmond, on the east side)
15143 NE 90th st.
tel 425 869 7067

As far as places to go, it depends on how long a day you're willing to
spend. The San Juan islands have lots of destinations, but make for a
really long day. For a short day, you could paddle to Blake island in
Puget Sound, or check out some places in the South Sound area (by Olympia)
like Squaxin island. You could also ask at any of the places mentioned
above for ideas. My by-far favorite destinations are on Vancouver island,
but that's probably a one weekend minimum coming from Seattle.
