I figured that a computer looking for wave patterns could cancel out all the obvious ones and then look for a hump that moved like a sub over time. If they could, the subs would then probably find a wave pattern and pace it to hide the motion of their hump by cloaking themselves in a wave pattern. Getting kind of far afield from kayaks here but understanding the difference between surface vessels and subs might shed some light on how a surface vessel works.
