Over the weekend I broke two ribs (the 7th and 8th on the right side). Since
I have a trip planned to the Azores in late July, I wonder if I'll be able to
paddle. I would appreciate any advice, recommendations or advice.

Thanks

Barbara

Hi Barbara et al!
Ouch! Oweee! I feel for you; I cracked one of my lower ribs a month or so
ago (fell on a shovel. pretty stupid, huh?) and it still hurts. Even so,
I've been out paddling my canoe pretty much every weekend, although I pay
for it the next day. I would imagine that so long as you are not in danger
of one of the broken ribs moving or whatever and doing further damage, your
ability to paddle will be determined by your tolerance to pain. I would be
pretty cautious as to how strenuous of a excursion you commit to, as you
will not be able to output anywhere near 100% of your normal level, and
also because the wrong movement, or an inadvertent blow to your damaged
ribs will quite likely incapacitate you for anywhere from a couple of
minutes to a day or longer. I'm sure you can imagine scenarios where that
would be "A BAD THING".
Additionally, here is an observation from my younger days on a motocross
track. With enough pain-killer in you, you can probably get up and run a
mile on a broken leg. Resist the temptation. You will pay for it in spades.
On the other hand, an 800mg ibuprofen caplet might save your butt if things
get real bad half the way home.
I personally have found that once I am safely home and parked in my
lazy-boy a couple of shots of Quervo with a cold beer chaser go a long way
toward easing sore ribs, and any other minor aches as well ;-)
Have fun, but take it real easy . . .
ByeBye! S.

Hmm....I agree with your advice,Steve, with one quibble. 600mg ibuprofen
twice a day is quite adequate ( especially for a woman , or someone weighing
under 160lbs). I would recommend taking something like cimetidine (Tagament
or Pepcid) an hour before hand to avoid stomach irritation. Additionally
ibuprofen (as well as relieving pain) is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent,
whose greatest effect occurs over a period of days (the anti-inflammatory
effect).

Also.. the 7/8th ribs anchor some of the muscles which permit forward
rotation of the shoulder when the humerus is at 90 degrees to the trunk, as
wellas lateral flexion of the trunk towards the pelvis. I would recommend
a "test drive" , before attempting really vigourous maneuvors (sic) , like
rolling.

Still 5 weeks is a good "healing period", and I wish her well.. :)

Barbara ....
To paraphrase my grandma, "I wouldn't do that if I were you, honey !"

I bear-hugged a rock pretty hard a few years ago and had a severely
bruised rib cage up high under the arm. Wasn't broken, just bruised
with that eggplant color. Turned all sorts of colors over the next month
or so. It was real interesting getting off the river that day as even
taking a full lungfull of air was just about all the pain I wanted.
Hot-tub time finally got rid of the soreness, but it took a while. If I
were you I'd try some "gentle" swimming in about 3 weeks to "see how it
feels" and then go from there. You'll know at that time what the right
thing to do is .....Steve may be right with the "Cuervo-Cure" ....it
won't help you paddle, but it might make you feel better about missing
some paddle time ! Here's to a speedy recovery .......Peyton

Ohhh bummer,
I have been following the posts and it seems touchy given the time frame.

Best of luck...being hurt is never a good thing. On another note, have you
ever paddled the Azores before? I have been through there many times aboard
ship but never stopped. It looks great from the water (so close yet so far).
 Seem like an exotic getaway.

Is the Azores a "must see" for us paddlers?
