I had a couple of hours this morning so I went to the local fresh water puddle to play with some paddle float rolls. After rolling up (or exiting) I experienced sever dizziness that lasted for close to 2 minutes or so. When I exited, I could barely maintain balance even while holding onto the boat in waist deep water. I had a custom made ear plug in one ear which extends into the ear canal to protect a perforated ear drum. I assume this is the culprit. The same thing happened during the rolling class a couple of weeks ago. That went away after 10-15 minutes though. I forgot the hip pads so was sloshing around in the cockpit pretty badly and quit after several repeated incidences. Anyone else experience this kind of equilibrium problem when turning upside down? My guess is that it is due to the fact that you've plugged one ear. Since the other will get water in it, you get a different temperature in each ear. This will cause your balance organs to react in a funny way. Try getting a plug for the other ear and see of it goes away. I used to get dizzy while praticing rolls. The problem was the fact that, while I was warm, I kept throwing my head into 50 degree water every 10 seconds and freezing my head. Then I started using a neoprene hood, and the problem went away. The neoprene hood also prevents cold water from getting in my ears; if any water gets in my ears, it has alredy been warmed by my head elsewhere. I really recommend a good neoprene hood for practicing rolls. The increased comfort makes a big difference. - Julio > > I had a couple of hours this morning so I went to the local fresh water > puddle to play with some paddle float rolls. > > After rolling up (or exiting) I experienced sever dizziness that lasted for > close to 2 minutes or so.
