The shock cord is super heavy duty.  Over the years, Feathercraft has
experimented with various ways of mounting the shock cord inside the
tubes, changing things like length, diameter, etc.  I would think that
with all the experimentation they would like have a setup that should
last quite a long time.  It pays to soak the frame parts in a bathtub at
the end of the season to let saltwater and grit clear away from the
shock cord.

It would to the degree that you would then sink the boat further into
the water and the flared sides of the boat rest on the surface giving
you a slightly wider beam.
