Nice to see all the responses to the call for help re Maligiaq racing in Canada. Not much I can do from the other side of the Atlantic. I was however somewhat surprised by the sudden rush for cheque books and alarm about possible scams, infact I found it a bit demeaning that some folk presumed he was just looking for your coveted American Dollars. As I read the request it wasn't a plea for charity or sponsorship, but just looking for assistance with transport and a friendly face for a young lad a long way from home ..... All the best to Maligiaq, I hope he makes it to the race and has fun competing. Colin, There was no concern on my part that Maligiaq nor his father were after anything of any negative sort from us. It feels great to be able to be of help to someone like him. My question was only to be sure this really was Maligiaq, not someone using his name. I am embarassed that it was taken as such. If you took it that way others might have as well, and it could feel like that to him if he hears about it. I sincerely hope that if he is told of this that he understands it was a question to be sure he was the one to whom we'd offer financial assistance, open our homes or ask friends to do so, or took time and made an effort to provide for anything he might need. It is our pleasure to offer him what we can. I fear that there are those out there who would use our delight against us. It is unfortunate that some will take not only our money but destroy the heart of community with their dishonesty. I only counseled caution to be sure this was the real Maligiaq, not an impostor. I am sorry that I was not clear enough to have avoided this. Joan IMHO, what you did was very clear and quite rational. Try not to sweat it! There's way too much deception and scamming going on out there -- especially via this medium. It's smart, for all of us, to take a moment and search for reassurance and confirmation in situations like this. And my guess is that Magliaq, being a computerphile as well, would understand your actions full well. I'd also like to mention that the support being proffered to Magliaq by members on this list is a very cool thing! From QCC providing a 600 to offers of money and travel assistance from strangers -- makes me damned proud to be a member of this wonderful global paddling community.
