Does anyone have an update on Maligiaq's situation? Haven't heard
anything since Monday and was wondering about the progress.

Thanks,

Jackie

Yes, I've had a couple of messages from Geno. I asked him to keep the rest
of the group informed.

Maligiaq was able to send him an e-mail. The kayak sponsored to him "feels
good and paddles smoothly." His home-made paddles were not on the bus when he
got there (!!!!!) and they'd put out a tracer.

As of Friday July 30, Geno had received $80 in donations. He will mail a
certified check (overnight) to Maligiaq when he gets a mailing address.

His kayak left our plant Monday evening shipped "Time Critical" and it
sailed thorugh customs and arrived in Montreal early Wednesday morning.
Michael Bradley and Maliguaq picked up the boat Thursday AM and when I heard
from them on Thursday they had the paddles as well. Maliguaq was going to be
doing a public demo at the Olympic Rowing Basin Friday evening and then
prepare for the trials this weekend. This weekend there will be two
preliminary races, a sprint and a longer race to weed out the weaker
paddlers, Only the top 100 finishers in this weekend's race will be able to
compete in the Traversee itself on the 8th. I will pass along information as
I receive it.

I was talking with John Heath last night. Maligiaq is quite frustrated
because his paddles are missing. He had two Greenland paddles packed in a
tube and I don't know if he shipped them ahead or loaded them on the bus
with him, but their whereabouts are unknown.

I certainly hope that the paddles are located in time for the race. I had
been storing these paddles for Maligiaq and shipped them to him in early
July so he could train for the race. One of these paddles is the paddle
that he made in Greenland and successfully used in the National
Championships. It's one thing to be in a new boat, it's quite another to
have to compete with an unfamiliar paddle. Keep your fingers crossed...

Maligiaq has his paddles, they arrived a day after he did. He has been trying
some hi-tech paddles to compare them with his. One of the races in the
preliminary is in fast current and he is concerned about the 'grip' his
paddles will have as they are designed more for distance than power. I'll let
you know on Monday how he did.
