I would like to locate a really "non slip" coating for the bow deck of my
plastic kayak.

Any suggestions?

My new pup, KoKo, really enjoys our paddles. However, her rambunctiosity
causes a goodly few "Puppy overboard!"s on each paddle. Recent experiments
using the old backdoor "WELCOME" mat under the bow bungees shows promise. Of
course she won't stay on the friggin' thing.

So whatchall think? Is there a rubber, vinyl, ? waterproof coating I can
apply to my plastic boat? I've considered rubber sheeting and neoprene
wetsuit material, but these add complication.

TIA

Gary

Polyethylene does not bond well to much of anything. About the best you can
do is roughen it thoroughly with 80 grit sandpaper and hit it with two coats
of Weldwood contact cement. Apply two coats of the same to one side of that
padding sold for use under carpets and slap it on. It will not last forever,
but the padding is cheap, and a replace job is not much more work than the
original. In the bright side, when you get tired of the padding, one of the
heavy-duty adhesive removers used to prepare windshield recesses before
putting in a new auto windshield will take the contact cement off.

The carpet padding is incredibly frictiony, and is sold in marine stores as a
"non-skid" material.

Sand it with 36 or 60 grit or maybe get a gunstock checkering tool and have
at the plastic. Maybe you could smear some "Hydrogrip" around and throw in
some clean sand. Yes it will be ugly. I wouldn't expect to find any products
that will stick to polyethelene and I suspect "Hydrogrip" is marginal but
probably better than anything else. Note I have never tried any of these so
value it as much as you paid for it.

I didn't know this Dave.
Another good contact adhesive remover is ®Bestine available at art and
drafting supply stores.

I've also not had much luck with getting polyethylene to bond to anything but
itself through heat........but hey.....if you're going for.......... UGLY.......
why not just attach a piece of deep pile Puce shag carpet to that foredeck (still
available in finer Goodwill home decor shops), why ......you could even pick up
a lava lamp to accessorize your concept yak, (admittedly the power cord might be
a problem, but it might be able to be converted to 12 volt!), for that
all-so-desireable RETRO look! Don't forget the patruli oil!!! No
actually, I once had an infinity quantum whose hull was so scarred that I coated
it with thickened West Epoxy (thickened with 404 filler) and graphite
powder.......and it stuck through all sorts of abuse! Mostly. A possibility is
to rough up a patch that you want no-slip.......then coat with West and filler,
and add sand when it is yet uncured. Or colored aquarium gravel!~ That'b
cool. Check also boaters supply stores as they have a product called No Slip
or something- or- other that is basically an aerosol epoxy with an abrasive in
it. I used it once on a long board and it worked too well...........rubbed my
nipples off. Real men don't often think of their nipples.......I do now. All
the time. If you find it....try it on a test piece, (not your chest).
                                                                        Chris

Matt,

Tell me more about this "Hydrogrip".

What is it and where do I find it?

Incidentally, I'm looking for a system that works without grit in the belief
that all abrasive decking eventually shortens the dog.

Ahhh ... that WAS NOT a metaphor ...

Cheers,

Gary

How about the stuff you stick to the bottom of your bathtub to keep from
falling? If it sticks on bathtub material, it might do OK on polyethelene.
You could use the long strips, or make a charming pattern Martha Stewart
would love with the stick-on daisies. Maybe even fish shapes.

Now there is a concept that we could really sink our collective teeth into.

        THE FIRST ANNUAL PADDLEWISE
WHAT-I-COULD-DO-TO-MARTHA-STEWART-IF-I-GOT-HER-IN-A-KAYAK
                                    ESSAY CONTEST!!!!!
Let your imagination go wild!!! I don't know about y'all, but I'm
getting just a little sick and tired of that Damnyankee telling me *how* to
stencil my driveway!!!! I live (sort of) in Savannah, on Wilmington Island ,
a little yuppie enclave I generally refer to as The Valley of the Volvos, and
I just *know* that it is her corrupting influence (via his wife) that has
caused a friend of mine to paint his house ............(are you ready for
this?) PINK!!!! This used to be a red blooded 'merikan male who has hiked
the A.T.!!!!! He paddles!!!!!! (or used to.) Now he gardens!!!!!
American/ Canadian Males TO ARMS!~!!!! She must be stopped!!!!!! She is
corruptin' our wimmenfolk!!! Listen to me!!! She will not stop until she
has every one of you MEN in a pinafore apron serving brie and chardonney to
garden parties across the USof A!!!! You Canadians don't you look so
smug.......she's working her way Northward!!!!

I need your help! I tried to flame her myself, but all I got back was one
of those threatening notes you see in the movies they make out of cut out
letters of different size and color from various magazines............how did I
know it was her????
THE LETTERS WERE CUT OUT WITH PINKING SHEARS!!!!!!!
it had lace borders..........and it was JUST PERFECT!
                                                                Chris

Speaking of nipples, don't ever paddle without something between your nylon
life jacket and your nipples. I found this out the hard way when I removed
my T-shirt on a very hot day before a kayak race where wearing a PFD was
required. Now even a T-shirt isn't enough to protect them from the PFD on a
long paddle.

........Peter, I'm flattered. But really the joke's told, and I don't see any
reason to go back and retell. I fear, like a four year old retelling a stale
knock knock joke, and they become the joke, as the joke is inconsequencial,
becomming like the four year old.
Really of much greater worth would be to archive these threads about the
BWCWA
storms this 4th of July weekend. I have always mused while watching a
waterspout in the distance on the ocean.........what would I do .......(other
than beat-feet it out of there), start humming 'Nearer My God to Thee' like the
band on the Titanic? I've played some tough gigs.........but talk about your
tough gigs!
