Hi, thanks for your advice. The problem is that the K-Light has a peaked
down-sloping-toward-the-bow deck which of course isn't solid, but fabric
over tubing. So it'll be hard to fit. Also, the boat isn't well provided
with deck rigging, and besides, I'd really like to rig up that V-hook
arrangement suggested by John Winskill to hold a paddle outrigger in an
emergency, right where the compass has to go. (Re-entry in this boat is
preferably from the back.)

For all these reasons (also because I just got a GPS) I'm wondering how
badly I need a great big compass. I don't expect to be out of sight of
land except in fog, and wind is much more of a problem to be expected.

Re the drytop vs. jacket discussion, I didn't make it clear that I meant a
full neoprene (wetsuit) jacket, which I already own, to go over the FJ
wetsuit. That's what I used in the Hebrides before, with an ordinary
paddle jacket over it. It was reasonably comfortable for paddling, and
took a couple of (deliberate) immersions without killing me. My concern
now is with possible immersion and not being able for some reason to
re-enter quickly. I wonder if I should just wait around for a good deal on
a full dry suit.
