>Club Peace River outing this weekend.

Yeah; my parents home in Hollywood has 18" of freeboard.
Their lake is the highest in memory (which is the entire
life of that man-made b.o.w.).

The second longest night I ever spent was on an October
backpacking trip in N. FL: mistakenly expecting a cool
mosquito-free night (read: ill-prepared), at about 3 a.m. I
was lying in the river with only my nose exposed, vainly
seeking respite and conservation of my dwindling blood
supply. But at least you have pit-vipers.

I'll take the Indigenous-American Summer we are having here
in the P.N.W.; Saturday night (after surfing all day) was
spent with friends around a big roarer, 50 degrees F.,
s'mores, trees moaning in the wind, spectacular shooters.
Morning visitation by the local Elks club.

Hmm, well lets see. This Saturday we'll be lying beneath a Florida moon,
upper 60's, contemplating what snow and ice must feel like, while roasting
fresh lobster and red snapper caught from the yaks earlier in the day, all
the while sipping a nice cold beverage of choice, on an island off the
coast... Nope, ain't interested in a trade... but I do agree upon the
s'mores ;-)

Well, then, that's good. This weekend I'll be enjoying the extended summer weather at Drake's Estero, north of San Francisco, watching the seals, herons, egrets, and bat rays in protected, calm water in completely unspoiled surroundings.

>From there I'll head on up to the Pacific Northwest to see if any traces of summer remain. Perhaps I'll get to visit the Nisqually area north of Olympia and see how wild the wildlife is. Perhaps a cup of peppermint tea to warm me in the early morning light and then off through the landscape of cool water and evergreen trees.

No talk of ski racks replacing kayak racks from me. The season is still young. Adventure awaits.

(Now does anybody know how to get to the Department of Fish & Wildlife Luhr Boat Ramp near Olympia? Instead of those "gas-food-lodging next right" signs, we need "kayak put-in, next right". If I find myself at Mt. Rainier then I took the wrong exit.)

jerry.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry; don't you have a rack wide enough to carry both
racks? Mine's wide enough to carry my mountain bike, 'yak, and skis,
although having time to use all 3 in a single weekend would prove tough.

I did combine downhill skiing and kayaking one weekend in April--I did
an evening paddle on Lake McDonald in Glacier NP on Friday night, skied
the Big Mountain all day Saturday, and did a 3-mile crossing to Wild
Horse Island in Flathead Lake (MT) on Sunday. Yep, the perfect weekend
for a weekend warrior.

The Sugarbush triathlon in mid April (in Waitsfield Vermont)
5 mile run, 8 mile paddle, 12 mile bike, 5K cross country ski.

Yeah I know, a triathlon should only have 3 events.

I've got vivid memories of my canoeing partner being thrown over the
bow of the canoe, into the water, when we hit a rock. We had been breaking
skim ice in the corners and he was just wearing sweats (and a pfd) when he
went in, brrrr.

There are probably lots of other similar races.

People in the Southwest, e.g. californians going up to Mammoth, probably
have a much easier time doing this than those in a cold climate.

Years ago they held a triathlon in Vermont - Cross country ski race at the
top of the mountain, WW kayak run down to the valley and a bike race in the
valley. I always wanted to do it, but didn't have any WW skills in those
days. I don't know if it's still done.

You bet your bippy.. Hey, one thing I have learned from this list, is
cold weather prep... Insulated Pfd's, thermal undies under gortex PJ's with a
drysuit on top of it all. I have three knives at ready, two of which are
permanently tethered to my body thanks to the local piercing parlour. My
doctor has installed a radar reflector in my skull (makes airport security go
really batty tho). I have three different styles of paddle for whatever
conditions I may run into. Paddle floats for recovery, water treating pills
for my PURifier produced water just in case. A GPS, two compasses, a cel
phone, short wave radio, VHF radio, three different kinds of flares. An
electric bilge pump, with manual backup. And yup, its south Florida, no
Glock, but my trusty model 66, stainless w/ stainless shells just in case. Oh
yeah, bear repellent in the front pocket of PFD.. Whew, now if I just have
enough room for the butter for lobster, I'll have it made!

Scott, way TOOO funny. congratulations - and I was certainly thinking of the
Snowdrops on the Yak and the rest of the hardy P'wisers. It was "frolicking"
cold on the banks of the Peace River this weekend.

Not a thermometer between the 15 of us, but it must have gotten down to the
low 50s or (GASP), perhaps the 40s. The mist was so thick over the river you
couldn't see very far, but the full moon made it all look beautiful.

I was in my summer weight Slumberjack So-Lite (that packs ever so small for a
"polyfill") sleeping bag. I was wearing leggings (sans socks because my only
pair got muddy - I'm learning to pack light!), then a fleece vest, T-shirt,
long-sleeved cordury shirt, and a "sweatshirt" hooded jacket and I was still
on the coolish side. At least the bottom half of me was - I used my Gore Tex
parka as a top layer blanket and the difference was noticeable.

I thought we were supposed to get autumn weather before the really cold stuff!

I'd appreciate private responses for recommendations of a slightly warmer
"polyfill" bag that packs small. I have a BEAUTIFUL Feathered Friends down
bag called the Rock Robin. It's bright red, has a drawstring bottom for when
my legs feel claustrophic and want to stretch, and zippered armholes for
reading etc. Technically, one should be able to "wear" the bag and hop (Rock
Robin?) over to the the "bathroom" without having to exit one's bag. I'm
very reluctant to take a down bag on a water trip. I think it was almost
$300.

However, if anyone knows of a really "cheap" down back - perhaps seconds - or
factory closeout - I might be tempted. Just don't want to take a bulky bag.
Tx
