G'Day, Thanks to all of you who were able to send me information and websites and experiences. It was very encouraging, valued and much appreciated. I met a double amputee paddling in the False creek area in Vancouver once. She was paddling alone and had no apparent problems whatsoever. I took a group of girl guides out for a half hour trip this summer in calm water...one of the girls had CP...she seemed to do fine in the front of a double with one of the guide leaders. I believe the girl counts it as one of her lifetime experiences. One of my regular paddling buddies is an amputee and he isn't slowed down a bit, in fact he tackles waves that I am cautious of in big storms on our lake. I remember the "caveman" submitting an item on the old wavelength list taking a handicapped paddler off the coast in Hawaii I think. :) Jim *****Does anyone have any experience of taking mildly disabled passengers? If so > I would be grateful to know of any problems, solutions etc. > > All the best, PeterO > > > *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
Peter, Does "having half a brain" count? <G> I just joined a kayak club out of Paulsbo on Tuesday, and have firm intentions to join one down in Gig Harbor-that will probably be the one that I get active with. Saturday I got a "quickie" review of my navigation class-so I can finally read my chart correctly. The first goal is to get my boat and equipment together. That's tomorrow. Then [betting on weather, etc...] I HOPE to get back in sea-water on Saturday. I have decided that until I manage a few self rescues, I will stay in the harbor... Based upon my last trip-[Feb? sheesh!] my right is stronger than my left, and so I will try gripping the paddle a bit more "right of center..." Because of my poor concept of time, I will place my watch outside my drysuit. I was not so good at realizing when I had over stressed myself, resulting in pain when taking deep breaths for about a week as my muscles got back to normal...<VBG> <shrug> There is a chance that my [hoped for] trip Saturday, will not be alone-one of the members of the club I have not yet joined, made a possible offer. If you would like, I can report what is learned... Peter et al.: You proposal regarding CP in the front of a kayak doesn't seem farfetched. Here in the USA the ACA has long had a paddlers with disabilities program with an endorsement available to ACA Instructors. On a few occasions I have had legally blind paddlers in the bow of my canoe. They were able to see light and make out some shapes. They did well in Class 1 and lightweight Class 2, even becoming aware of potential difficulties and dealing with them.... In a double kayak you as stern would have considerable control available to you and you're not planning on difficult water. Two things do come to mind. Would you be able to paddle consistently enough when there might be considerable variance in stroke rate in the front? -- And could you compensate for differences in strength from one side to another? If you feel confident enough with that, go for it.... On this topic- I have changed my web page to reflect my move across the Sound. Finally garnering the resources to take another try at getting back to paddling-gives me reason to add in a "Kayak/Paddling with disabled people" section to the "Post 9/99" area of my page. I wonder if any disabled paddlers, would be willing to contact me regarding this topic/idea...? I know that I was getting to a place where I thought seriously of giving up paddling-mostly due to cognitive difficulties. I have been impressed with others stories I have been reading! It gives me a sense of gratitude for the skills I still possess. Thank you, Tom... <gadfly_at_tscnet.com> homepage: http://www2.tscnet.com/~gadfly/ *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
