It took Ms. Greenlaw 245 pages (out of 258!) to say:

"Readers of The Perfect Storm are curious about my experience in the
Halloween gale, and are often disappointed when I explain to them where I was
located the weather was not life threatening."

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!! GRRRRR. I only wish she'd put that bit at the
beginning. I kept waiting for the connection. She made a few references to
her sister ship and the crew but I get the impression that she was riding the
coattails of a successful book.

I'm not interested in fishing in the first place!!! Now, if anyone would
like to tell me why it is supposed to be such a great book.......

I certainly hope I don't run into her at the Miami Book Fair this weekend.

When I read the dust jacket, IIRC, it seemed plain to me the book was about the
rigors of commercial swordfishing. I read the book, and got what I expected.
Ms. Greenlaw did a fine job detailing what commercial fishing is like,
especially the peculiar love/hate relationship fishers have with their craft.
That was fascinating.

Because I live in a commercial fish boat town, and I know several commercial
fishers, the book was interesting to me. I've also lost a couple acquaintances
who fished, and my son has decked on charter boats (NOT the same scene as on a
commercial boat). That also made the book worth reading.

I never thought the book was intended to be about her experiences in the
Halloween Storm, before or after reading it.

I'd recommend it to anybody who wants to know what commercial fishing is
**really** like -- but never to someone who wanted to know about the "Perfect
Storm."

Well Sandy I disagree with you. I read the book and liked it. Like Dave
Kruger I got what I expected. Unlike Dave I did not grow up in a fishing
town, although I knew many Lake Superior fishermen when I was a kid. Their
style of fishing was not at all like what is described in "The Hungry
Ocean." The Lake Superior fishermen that I knew fished in open boats,
usually fished alone and did not bother to learn to swim.
