Scott observes: <People who are content exploring calm water on the weekend
certainly do not need to know how to roll. >

To me, "it depends" - depends on quite a few things. In my own case, I can
die just as easily on a weekend day as on a Wednesday, and I can die in calm
water.

Over the years I've paddled alone 98% of the time and that's a big factor in
my case. I had a very reliable roll on both sides with backup self-rescues,
but those rolls almost deserted me after my neck injury. After a very
discouraging practice session yesterday I've decided that I'd better hang up
my paddle until warmer temps return next summer, and/or paddle only when I
can go out with people who are skilled at rescue techniques.

 Arrrrghhhh!

Arrrrrghhhh, indeed! Sorry to hear about your injury.

I'm not sure what you prefer to paddle, but maybe if the desire to be out
there is stronger than the desire to be in that kayak, maybe you could
beg, borrow, a more stable/ forgiving kayak for your recovery period..?

Just a wild thought.
Hope you are better soon!

James

What Bill doesn't mention is that he's practice in water that I believe is
less than 40 degrees. I measured the water with a stream thermometer
in one of the tributaries of the lake that Bill and I paddle yesterday and it
was 42 degrees and I think it's colder on the lake. I also just guessing
but I bet that Bill was practicing in his Seguin and not his Romany yesterday.
In any case, he's welcome to paddle my Skerray anytime.

Bill;
You may well have already covered these bases in trying to roll with a sore
neck but, just in case you haven't, I thought I would offer a suggestion.
If you haven't already done so try a boat that allows you to easily lay back
onto the back deck (Romany, Aqilla etc.). By doing a sweep roll and keeping
your weight low on the back deck no "head dink" will be necessary and it
might well solve your dilemma.
I always fight a sore neck.
