While it won't work for take-aparts (unless you hose clamp them as someone 
else suggested), I use the following solution to my one-piece whitewater 
paddles to the same cable that holds the kayak to the roof rack or boat 
storage rack: I just took an old pair of handcuffs I had lieing around the 
house (don't ask), and locked one "hand" 'round the shaft, and the other 
"hand" around the cable. If you don't have handcuffs, most large cities have 
speciality "paddling" stores where they can be purchased:-)
