Nick, I use a Uniden HH (don't remember the modl number ) and I love it. The one I have is not waterproof so I keep it in a dry bag for radios. I can use it without removing it from the bag. The radio used to be kept tied to my boat, but lately I've switched and I tie it to my PFD. The reason I chose the Uniden was $$$. It was very inexpensive and my not quite so serious paddling wife, thinks that there are other things besides kayaking that we should spend our money on. Performance wise, I have gotten radio checks from a local yacht club while I was 3.5 NM away and trnsmitting on LOW power of 1 watt. They couldn't believe how clear I was especially compared to "real" boats with a good antenna and more power. I've never had to go to 5 watts to raise anybody on this radio and I would buy another one in a minute.
