Happy New Years!

I had two that were only seconds out of date (Jan 1 2000).
One fired a flare that seemed a little dim, one popped
pretty loudly, but the flare did not seem to ignite. Both
were made in July 1996. One that expired in 1996 (that I
kept in my wallet for emergencies) didn't even try to go
off. Lesson: rotate your flares.

Any other experimentors out there? Results?

I was also reminded of the rule of checking expiration dates on my last few
night paddles when I decided to demonstrate the visibility of the 6 inch
chemical light sticks I carry in my emergency signaling kit. Two tries and
two failures. Very embarrassing.

The next night paddle I tried and failed 5 more light sticks I had in my
miscellaneous gear. They were all over 5 years old. Lesson re-learned.

I have now prominently marked the expiration date on my replacements. By
the way, they are only $1.15 each at
