When I go to Monterey Bay, I always use Monterey Bay Kayak to rent from. They are SUPER nice, committed to safety (they checked to ensure I had skills and proper equipment before they'd rent me a boat) and they have a great location right on the bay. It's about a 10-15 minute paddle from there along cannery row to the Monterey Bay aquarium, through some awesome kelp beds. Tons of Sea Otters, Sea Lions, etc. An otter jumped onto my boat while I was rafted up in the kelp and shocked the heck out of me! He of course knew exactly what he was doing, and when I didn't go over, left to find somebody more fun to play with. (PS you aren't allowed to approach the wildlife too closely, it's considered harassment-- but the opposite certainly doesn't seem to bother the wildlife :) Also if you're a diver, some of the best diving around is right there in M.B. as well. Even better, I may be in Monterey for Safety School that same time period. Maybe we'll bump into each other out on the water.
