I have been looking for this book, and find it is out of print. While browsing through bn.com, I came across mention of their rare/out of print/secondhand division, and did a search. Turns out they have not one but two copies.... But... One is $105, the other is $126. In paper. I realize that we consider this book a classic, but really..... Here's the URL if you simply have to have one. I decided to pass. I don't know if this URL will work, as it's wrapped on the screen. May need multiple copy/paste maneuvers. http://shop.barnesandnoble.com/OopBooks/oopResultsTitle.asp?userid=49FTHVZCAK&mscssid=W1PFUXKJTRS12L4C001PQU67D408BJT1&srefer=&author=bascom&rstart=76&WID=1179777 Steve *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

I don't collect first editions etc., so I have no idea about that sort of thing. I've been buying used books through ABE http://www.abe.com/ (I think it was Advanced Book Exchange or something) for a few years, and in fact I bought my copy of Bascom through them a couple years ago. They also show 3 current copies, at $25, $75, and $13.95. http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/IList for their search engine. I also tried Bibliofind at http://www.bibliofind.com/ and found 3 copies, one at $75, one at $37.50, and one for $2! http://www.bibliofind.com/cgi-bin/texis.exe/s/search/search.html?dealerid=&qauthor=Bascom&qtitle=Waves+and+Beaches&qcomments=&minp=&maxp=&daysback=at+any+date&SUBMIT1=SEARCH BTW, like virtually everyone else familiar with _Waves and Beaches_, I highly recommend it. Really interesting, especially for sea kayakers who spend a lot of time on the coast. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
Besides Bibliofind (which is great!) try Alibris http://www2.alibris.com/cgi-bin/texis/bookstore I was able to get an excellent copy (and had a choice of condition and price ) for Porsilds 1957 monograph "Illustrated Flora of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago) through them . I might also mention that both Bibliofind and Alibris are "search engines" for independent used book dealers.....a breed that certainly needs our patronage in the face of the mega-dealers like Amazon.com and BN...I often buy used books through these independents rather than pay full price for a new copy. And I certainly like the personal service for out of print books. There is a good representation of Canadian book dealers, as well as a handful of British and Australian dealers listed. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bob Myers <bob_at_intelenet.net> To: Steve Cramer <cramer_at_coe.uga.edu>; Paddlewise <paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net> Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2000 3:17 PM Subject: Re: [Paddlewise] Bascom's _Waves and Beaches_ > On Aug 26, 15:03, Steve Cramer wrote: > } Subject: [Paddlewise] Bascom's _Waves and Beaches_ > > I have been looking for this book, and find it is out of print. I think both ABE and Bibliofind (and probably Alibris, though I haven't looked at them) also have "want lists" where you can ask them to email you whenever they get another copy in to one of their member stores. So if you can wait, you can often still find it cheap that way. BTW, I would suggest looking for the revised version (1980) rather than the original version (1964).
Bob (or anyone else familiar with the book), can you give those of us unfamiliar with _Waves and Beaches_ a brief "book report"? Thanks, Shawn -- Shawn W. "Shawn W. Baker" wrote: > > Bob (or anyone else familiar with the book), can you give those of us > unfamiliar with _Waves and Beaches_ a brief "book report"? Lucid, written for the lay public, treatise on waves of all types from tsunamis to ripples. Includes effects of currents and waves on landforms: erosion, mass wasting, underwater sand transport, etc. Best introductory text I know of for getting a person thinking about waves and beaches. Good pictures, diagrams, and explanations. Author was one of the "original" oceanographers (started before sea-floor spreading was a baby). Spent the better part of two winters in the late 40's surveying beaches of the west coast (of the US) using an amphibious vehicle (a Dukw) to "surf" in to the beach while heaving a lead line and radioing depth info to a team of recorders who triangulated the position of the Dukw. "Surfed" the thing in double overhead stuff.
